Longnets from magnumThe origins of the net are lost in pre-history, but through the ages their basic concept has remained unchanged. It is certainly one of the oldest methods devised by man to catch his food. Net making materials have changed dramatically in recent times. Laboriously knotted sinews, rawhide or vegetable based twines have been superseded by man made synthetics which do not rot, no matter how poorly they are treated. More important in respect of the longnet is that nylon can be machine knitted to produce nets of previously only dreamt of fineness, weight and uniformity - and at a fraction of the cost of hand made ones. coppiced As Moucher Products we were the first suppliers of this system and kits are supplied ready for assembly in the ‘G S Waters’ Style, a unique method of longnetting, perhaps the most efficient and quickest method yet devised. We think our assembly instructions are foolproof, but if you find otherwise ‘phone us and we’ll try to sort you out. We recommend as essential viewing, Trapline Videos – ‘The art of longnetting’ by Glen Waters, who is regarded by many as the Master. Our poles have grommets in place of the elastic bands shown in his video and this makes them even easier to use. No more new copies are being run off and we have sold all ours so it means having to beg, steal or borrow a copy. Whichever way you have to do it, it’s worth it. Poles are usually set at approximately 8 yard centers. A 6 yard stop
net therefore needs only 2 end poles, a 25 yard longnet 4 poles, a 50
yard longnet 7 poles and a 100 yard longnet 13 poles. For easier handling
on bad ground many netsmen prefer their poles spaced a little closer.
If you like to set your poles closer together simply order additional
poles. Our nets have 50% slack built in (ie. a 100 yard net will have
150 yards of net in it ) plus heavy duty head and foot ( top and bottom
) lines ready fitted. Longnet price list July 2006
